Southwest Airlines to star in TV series
DALLAS
Southwest Airlines Co. says production will start this week on a TV series that will provide a behind-the-scenes look at air travel.

The airline said Thursday that the TLC network has ordered 13 half-hour episodes from ITV Studios America. There's no title or broadcast dates yet.
Southwest said the show will feature customer and employee stories at Southwest. If that sounds like a rerun, Southwest was also the setting for a show called "Airline," that ran on the A&E network and featured vignettes about employees and passengers.

More recently, The CW network aired "Fly Girls," featuring young flight attendants for Virgin America, and ABC-TV is currently running a dramatic series called "Pan Am," which seeks to capitalize on nostalgia for the iconic airline's glory days in the 1960s.

Reality show begins filming next week at BWI
Coming program on TLC promises a behind-the-scenes look at Southwest Airlines

Passengers at BWI-Marshall might notice camera crews scurrying around concourses A and B next week when a new reality TV show about air travel begins shooting at the airport.
The so-far unnamed show, from TLC, claims to give TV viewers unprecedented access into the day-to-day inner workings of Southwest Airlines, by far BWI's largest carrier.
The bit of celebrity comes at an opportune time for the airline, as it's in the middle of consolidating with BWI's No. 2 carrier, AirTran.

It's also casts a spotlight on the airport as it undergoes a major expansion that will transform its central section, including parts that have been unchanged since its opening in 1950.
"It's a good opportunity to showcase BWI and the region," said Jonathan Dean, airport spokesman.

Air travel shows are not a new experiment, and Southwest in particular seems as fond of the cameras as one of the Kardashians. In 2004, an A&E network show, "Airline," followed a similar premise to the new show, chronicling the daily misadventures of passengers and the personal lives of Southwest's employees. D-list celebrities, including Sisqo, lead-singer of 90s Baltimore R&B group Dru-Hill, and Latin television star Charo, both made appearances. The show lasted three seasons.

The airline's' latest reality TV gambit comes as another air travel show, the fictional series "Pan Am" is debuted this fall on ABC.
The show also coincides as the airline adjusts to a significant development. In May, Southwest and AirTran merged. They are waiting to hear from the Federal Aviation Administration on whether they can fly under one name.
For TLC, flying is an experience it thinks its viewers will relate to.

"Air travel has become incredibly accessible, and as a result, millions of travelers navigate the challenges of the airport, especially during the upcoming holiday season," network general manager Amy Winter said in a statement.
Dean said the airline approached the airport about the project several weeks ago.

"With BWI as one of Southwest's largest markets, it makes sense to shoot it here," he said.

Management was comfortable with the production because the airline is its biggest carrier. And, over the years, the airport has served as a filming location for several productions, including "The Wire," "Twelve Monkeys," starring Brad Pitt, and "Home for the Holidays," with Holly Hunter. "Airline" was shot mainly at BWI, Dean said.

For the new show, cameras will have access to all of the airlines' facilities, including its gates, air crafts and office space.
Dean said he did not anticipate customers would experience any delays in their travels because of the production.

Southwest Airlines Is Expanding Flight Destinations After AirTran Purchase

Southwest Airlines Co. (LUV) is adding flights from Houston Hobby airport and Chicago Midway while its AirTran unit will begin service to Puerto Rico and Mexico as the carriers shuffle planes after their combination in May.

AirTran’s changes include domestic flights from Baltimore- Washington International to New Orleans, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle, and service from Denver to New York LaGuardia and the Ohio cities of Dayton and Akron-Canton, Southwest said yesterday in a statement.

Southwest is changing AirTran’s network to create more point-to-point flights to bigger cities and reduce reliance on less-profitable passengers who make connections. The AirTran unit has announced plans to drop service to 10 of the 71 cities it served before being bought by Southwest, and these new flights are being added in part by repositioning those jets.

“The demand is there, the fares are high, the financials on the routes look good,” Bob Jordan, president of the AirTran unit, said yesterday on a conference call with reporters. “In today’s economy, we wouldn’t be adding the routes if the routes didn’t make really strong financial sense.”
AirTran’s Puerto Rico flight will travel from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, to San Juan. New service to Mexico, which needs government approval, includes San Antonio to Cancun and Mexico City. More international flights are coming, Jordan said, without elaborating.

Houston Hobby Flights
Southwest’s new flights from Houston Hobby travel to Raleigh-Durham, Kansas City and Seattle. The Chicago Midway flight will go to Oklahoma City.

Southwest and AirTran must keep flying separately until the Federal Aviation Administration grants them a joint operating certificate in the first quarter of 2012. The carriers will begin codesharing and blending networks in mid-2012, Jordan said.

These changes build on a Nov. 11 announcement by AirTran that it will cease flying to five airports next year including Miami and Washington Dulles, because of rising fuel costs and sluggish demand. AirTran had previously started pruning its network to drop smaller unprofitable cities such as Asheville, North Carolina, before the Southwest purchase was completed.

Passengers who fly nonstop are more profitable than those who connect, and changes to AirTran’s network including its Atlanta hub may generate $750 million to $1 billion in new annual revenue for Southwest, Chief Executive Officer Gary Kelly said in an October interview. Those projections are already included in the airline’s $400 million target for so-called merger synergies, he said.

Profitability
During the first quarter of this year, the last full period before the $1 billion AirTran deal was finished in May, Dallas- based Southwest reaped 11.99 cents for each passenger flown a mile, compared with 10.43 cents for AirTran, according to a regulatory filing.

About 75 percent of Southwest passengers fly nonstop, while only 35 percent flew that way on AirTran, according to data provided by Southwest.

Buying AirTran gave Southwest access to Atlanta, the biggest U.S. city it didn’t already serve, and a second fleet type with AirTran’s Boeing Co. 717 jets. It also eliminated AirTran as a low-fare competitor.

Buckle Up, Take Out Your Tablet, and Tune In to TV

Southwest Airlines is letting passengers watch TV for free on their personal devices when they fly on the carrier's Wi-Fi enabled planes.
As a part of the "TV Flies Free" offer, which kicked off Monday, satellite TV provider Dish Network will offer customers 14 live TV channels and up to 75 on-demand shows on the airline's more than 425 Wi-Fi equipped planes, which is about 75% of its fleet. Previously, the service cost $5.

Passengers will be able to stream the content on their iPhones, iPads, iPod Touches and most other Internet-ready personal devices.
"Southwest Airlines continues to innovate and evolve our on-board customer experience," Kevin Krone, Southwest's chief marketing officer, says in a release.
"We started with Wi-Fi, and now have expanded to television. This new offer puts free television in the hands of our customers."

The service will be powered by Row 44, a provider of satellite-based in-flight Wi-Fi. Row 44 launched live TV on Southwest in summer 2012.
JetBlue Airways and Virgin America have offered free live TV for years, on seat-back screens.

Row 44 estimates that 90% of passengers now travel with personal devices and that the absence of seat-back screens makes the aircraft lighter by about five pounds per person.
The benefit to Dish is that it will be able to include advertisements within the viewed content throughout the flight.

John Walton, director of data for Routehappy.com, says that Southwest is the first airline to combine live TV and wireless streaming to personal devices.
He says letting passengers stream content on their devices, vs. installing seatback TVs, saves the airline money.
But, he says, "the trick will be keeping people happy once their devices' batteries run down -- or stopping the batteries from running down with at-gate and on-board power ."

"Plugs and USB sockets ... are going to be increasingly important if fliers don't want to lug around a separate device for the flight," he says.

You can count Southwest Airlines among the U.S. airlines that won’t be allowing phone calls in the cabin if the Federal Communications Commission gives the go-ahead for airlines to do so.
Speaking at a Wings Club luncheon in Manhattan this after, Gary Kelly, the Southwest CEO and chairman, said 60% of customers in the airline’s surveys “totally oppose” in-flight phone calls. Kelly said he personally is against them, as well.

Although “things change,” Kelly said, “I don’t see it happening.”

Passengers don’t need to make phone calls in the cabin because they can communicate via text and email using Wi-Fi, Kelly said.
Southwest announced yesterday that it is the first U.S. airline to allow gate-to-gate messaging, via iMessage,, and it is the first to open Wi-Fi below 10,000 feet because its Row 44 Wi-Fi is satellite-based and has that capability.

Bags Fly Free

On other hot-button issues, Kelly hinted that there will be no near-term changes in the airline’s first two Bags Fly Free policy.
Kelly said Southwest studies the economics of various fees “very carefully,” and has found that the airline attracts more money and customers by “not nickel and diming our customers, and that is the plan going forward.”

“It is interesting to me how interested people are in the topic,” Kelly said.

Long-Haul Tyranny

Meanwhile, with the Wright Amendment expiring next year, Kelly said Southwest will launch service from Dallas Love Field to LaGuardia. Details of next year’s schedules will be announced during the first quarter.

“Long haul out of Dallas has long suffered from high fares, and I assure you they will be freed from that tyranny,” Kelly said.

Southwest Airlines is hiring 750 flight attendants for its national fleet, and it has a large pool of applicants from which to choose.
Bloomberg reports that Southwest, the largest carrier at Raleigh-Durham International Airport by passenger count, received 10,000 applications for 750 open flight attendant positions. For those doing the math at home, that's a rate of 80 per minute.
This is the first time that the Dallas, Texas-based airline has hired flight attendants from outside the company since 2011, according to the report. Dan Landson, a spokesman for Southwest, told Bloomberg that new hires at Southwest will earn about $24.39 an hour and work a minimum of 66 hours a month, and that hiring will be completed in the next year.
Landson added that Southwest is bolstering its staff as it anticipates the arrival of 55 Boeing Co. 737-800 jets in addition to the 44 it already flies.

Southwest (NYSE: LUV) shares were trading up by 0.2 percent as of mid-afternoon on Tuesday.
