The Brazilian air force has sent one of its Embraer KC-390 Millennium transports to Fairbanks, Alaska, for cold weather testing.
The aircraft arrived just south of the Arctic Circle on 8 February and tests were planned for the duration of the following week, the Brazilian air force said on 10 February. The in-development Boeing 777X commercial airliner is also in Fairbanks for cold weather testing.

“The test itself serves to verify how the aircraft operates in extreme cold situations that can reach -33°C (-27.4°F),” says the Brazilian air force. “The [isolated] parts of the aircraft and possible cracks caused by the cold will be studied.”
Embraer delivered the fourth KC-390 to the Brazilian air force in December. Brasilia has ordered 28 examples of the medium-lift transport in total.
Beyond Brazil, Hungary signed a deal for two KC-390s in November. Portugal ordered five KC-390s in 2019.
Embraer has struggled to gain additional commitments to buy the aircraft beyond an early flurry of letters of intent and orders. The company has 33 letters of intent outstanding that it is working to convert into firm orders. Argentina, Chile, Colombia, the Czech Republic and aviation services firm SkyTech have signed letters of intent.
Embraer’s new passenger turboprop may be launched in 2022

Arjan Meijer, CEO of the commercial aviation division, expects entry into service between 2027 and 2028
Embraer is increasingly determined to invest in the passenger turboprop market as its core business in commercial aviation. During an interview at the first E195-E2 delivery event for Helvetic Airways, Arjan Meijer, CEO of Embraer Commercial Aviation, stated that he hopes to launch the new aircraft next year.
“Embraer is still very much focused on the segment. We are still working on a turboprop and hope to launch the program in 2022,” he said. Meijer predicts that the new aircraft could enter service between 2027 and 2028.
The Brazilian planemaker intends to find partners to help share the high cost of development and says that there are several conversations in this regard.

The aircraft will be larger than the most popular regional turboprops on the market such as the ATR 72 and Dash 8, with capacity between 70 and 100 seats, and should take advantage of part of the E-Jet family design.
According to Meijer, the cross section of the fuselage will be similar to the E1 and E2 jets, which would mean an interior space far superior to competitors.
The executive’s confidence lies in the fact that turboprops can become the ideal platform for new propulsion technologies in early development, such as a hybrid-electric or hydrogen-powered – path chosen by Airbus, including a model similar to the ATR.
Demand for 1,080 aircraft
In previous statements, the company revealed that the plane could be launched with conventional propulsion, but accept possible changes in technology. A key point, however, is that the twin engine will need to offer a low noise and vibration level in order to eliminate one of the points considered negative for some passengers.
Arjan guarantees that the aircraft will offer “better performance, with better cost performance, much lower noise levels”.

In the annual survey in which it makes its demand forecasts, Embraer pointed to the need for 1,080 new turboprops by 2029. Most of these aircraft will be purchased by companies in China and Asia-Pacific (490 units) and Europe (190). The list also includes Latin America (130), Africa (80), North America (80), CIS (80) and the Middle East (30).
The manufacturer stated that 75% of the new regional jets and turboprops will serve to replace older jets and another 25% in the expansion of fleets following the market growth, which in the company’s view should return to pre-pandemic levels only in 2024.

The Brazilian government proposes slashing in half its order for the Embraer KC-390 tanker transport for budgetary reasons. Embraer is fighting the move. Such a steep cut would put a big hole in Embraer’s backlog of the slow-selling KC-390.
The airplane was designed with special missions in mind. Brazil needs an aircraft capable of short-field, rough runway operations to reach indigenous populations in remote sections of the country. The high-wing, twin-engine jet aircraft has an aft loading ramp for cargo. It also can serve as an aerial refueling tanker. The KC-390 is roughly the size of a Boeing 737.
When Embraer and Boeing planned to combine Embraer’s commercial division into a new joint venture called Boeing Brasil-Commercial, a second JV was planned just for the KC-390 program. Although EMB would own 51% of the KC-390 JV (as opposed to just 20% of the commercial JV), Boeing was going to be in charge of marketing the airplane worldwide. When Boeing withdrew from both JVs, Embraer was once again on its own. Sales have been slow.
There’s the possibility of de-militarizing the KC-390, however, for civilian use. Lockheed Martin (at the time, just Lockheed) did this for the venerable C-130. The civilian version was named the L-100. Alaska and Delta Air Lines were among the carriers that operated the L-100. The KC-390 is somewhat larger than the turboprop C-130.
Embraer considers civilian version
“Embraer is always assessing the market and having conversations with operators to improve the solution and scale demand for potential applications for the C-390 Millennium and its refueling variant KC-390,” the company said in a statement to LNA. “Since its inception, the KC-390 program was conceived with a focus on versatility, with solutions that make the conversion to a very efficient civil freighter feasible.
“As an example of this versatility, during the COVID-19 outbreak, the aircraft was extensively used by the Brazilian Air Force for humanitarian missions, showing its cargo capabilities. The civil certification had been obtained even before the serialization production started, which was an important step towards making a civil freighter version viable. Embraer is constantly evaluating the best timing to develop this version and is in contact with customers who have shown interest in being the launch customer. If and when Embraer has a decision, it will communicate the market.”
